In theory, we should be concerned about old age throughout our lives. However, it is around the age of 50/60 that we start to think about what it will be like when we are 80. It is at this age that we begin to feel, for example, a decrease in strength and energy and, if we do not have extra attention to food , physical activity and rest, this decrease can even be abrupt.

Know what to watch out for:

1. Exercise

A sedentary lifestyle is an enemy of health and well-being: it drives the loss of muscle mass and increases the likelihood of onset of diseases such as obesity, high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes, for example. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends 150 minutes of light to moderate physical activity per week, which gives a little more than 20 minutes per day.

Physical exercise is a great ally against depression and anxiety, keeps the brain active and healthy, ensures better nights sleep, increases self-esteem and ultimately promotes well-being. Walking early or late in the day or taking swimming lessons a few times a week are great starting points. Furthermore, they promote conviviality! Later on, we’ll talk about the benefits of being and living with people.

2. Have a Balanced Diet

For a long and healthy life, it is very important that you provide your body with the right fuel and the key is a varied and nutrient-rich diet.. You may have heard this advice before, but it doesn’t hurt to remember: give priority to fruit and vegetables, avoid red meat and cut back on fried foods and fats. Also pay attention to what you drink and how much calcium you eat.

Believe us when we say healthy food is delicious. Gone are the days when nutrient-rich food meant boring, tasteless dishes. With a quick search you will find a multitude of dishes that are great for the palate and fantastic for your health.

We are not saying that you must enter into an extremely strict regime. What’s too much is a mistake and a sweet or a snack from far to far makes anyone happy. Leave them for celebrations and festivities.

3. Don’t Underestimate the Power of a Good Rest!

Did you know that not sleeping has similar effects to mild mental brain damage? But more. A US study from the University of Kentucky concludes that lack of sleep makes the brain unable to effectively eliminate a toxic protein that accumulates there, beta amyloid, associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Sleeping well repairs your body, keeps your physical and mental health stable and has a huge impact on mood and cognition.

4. Maintain Healthy Social Relationships

Having independence and autonomy is a great way to age more happily. Unfortunately, as time goes by, we stop feeling so much like going out: sometimes because of the tight schedule, sometimes because of laziness. Later, you start to feel tired and have reduced mobility. Gradually, the habit of going out and socializing with friends is lost, isolation and loneliness appear and, who knows, illnesses such as depression.

Being with friends improves mood and releases hormones responsible for happiness and well-being, thus warding off depression. To maintain or create new social circles, it’s a good idea to take walks, enroll in courses or groups, take trips or join a sport. As indicated above, hiking and swimming are great examples.
